AJ Henry Park, located just west of the Florida State Capitol, is a great place for people of all backgrounds to visit. The park has a playground, a softball field, and a walking path that hugs Lake Jackson. It’s a peaceful, green area in the middle of a bustling metropolitan area. But what makes AJ Henry Park stand out from many other city parks in the area is its almost 100-year history.

AJ Henry Park is the largest park in the city of Tallahassee, Florida, and is home to many species of wildlife, including alligators, bobcats, and black bears. Because of the animals in the park, it’s recommended that visitors enter the park only during the daylight hours. The park is also a popular spot for camping, with 42 different campsites available.

Although there isn’t a whole lot of history in Tallahassee regarding the Civil War, AJ Henry Park honors heroism and sacrifice on both sides of the war. This 18-acre park, located at 902 S. Adams St., is a tribute to Confederate soldier Captain A.J. Henry, who lived in Tallahassee, and later rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Confederacy. The park’s centerpiece is a 30-foot tall obelisk, known as the Henry Monument. The obelisk features Confederate and Union symbols to honor those who served during the War. On the monument’s base are the names of 285 Confederate soldiers buried at Springfield Cemetery, which was established in 1854.

AJ Henry Park is Tallahassee’s largest park and home to three baseball fields, a soccer field, a skatepark, a playground, a dog run, an amphitheater, public restrooms, a picnic area, and walking trails. The park is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with public restrooms open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The skatepark is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the park is closed on Mondays.
