In 1888, 600 acres in what was then called West Lafayette were purchased for $50 by Henry and Nancy Lafayette, his deceased wife’s cousins. The Lafayettes hoped their new land would become a refuge for “the most select and opulent of our citizens”; their plan was short-lived, as the Lafayettes’ dreams of grandeur never got off the ground. After several years, the Lafayettes sold the land to 38 rich planters, who at the time were accustomed to spending $25,000 for 35 acres.

The architecture is distinctive, and this neighborhood is definitely one of the treasures of Tallahassee.
